Hot Off the Presses — The January Newsletter

Happy Holidays Missoula Curling Club!! Hope you are having a great time so far this year curling. Membership is at an all-time high at 135 happy curlers this year which is about 10 more than last year so we are seeing steady growth! In addition the Instructional League has seen some growth with about 12 participants this year as well. You will notice that there are “open ice” slots scattered throughout the season. If curling1213ayou are a member you can practice at these times for free. The slots termed instructional league will be an extension of the just finished instructional league to include additional folks that wish to attend a Learn to Curl session or more. Sign up on the website for this so we know how many will be coming to each of the next 6 sessions. Cost is $15 online or $20 at the door.   This will be a good time to teach some new prospective curlers the sport!

We will need your help throughout the year to volunteer on various events. The $25 rebate for 4 hours of club service is part of our program this year again. Once you have completed service hours for a needed activity please write that down and have a board member initial it in the 3 ring blue binder in our cabinet rink side. Duncan Lutes is again the coordinator for this. Rebates will be given out later in the season, or at our Bonspiel.  One such opportunity/need for club service is PE curling from both Sentinel High School February 24-25 and Big Sky High School March 14-15. Over 1,000 high school freshman and sophomores will participate in this again this year. This is a big deal for our community, and we will need many of you to help teach the kids our sport! Charlene Young is the coordinator for this with assistance from Dave Strobel. More on that signup coming out soon.

Coming up at the Ranch Club Golf Club again this year is a winter time sports open house where curling will be a featured activity. We will need your help teaching our sport there as well. Sunday January 17th will be the day, weather permitting!!!! Please contact us through our email if you can help with this. More out on times as we get closer.

Regional Bonspiels that we encourage teams to form up and participate in are posed below. Of special note are the MCC, Havre and Billings Spiels that we would like to see many of you that can, attend these in-state events supporting the Montana Curling Network. If you’re interested in going to these and do not have your whole team available, let us know and we can match you with another team. This is a very important marketing tool for MCC and they are always a ton of fun, as you get to curl your passion and make new friends throughout the northern Rocky Mountains in the U.S. and Canada.

Curling Club 2014-2015 Season Newsletter February 2015

We hope everyone is enjoying the winter league season so far! It is about that time of year for us to plan for the competitive league playoffs and the recreational league pairings for their 8th game of the season. These events will occur beginning February 21st from 9 pm to 10:30pm for the competitive league, and for both leagues, February 28th 9 pm-midnight, and ending 9 pm to midnight on March 14th.

tvad5The competitive league will be a single elimination playoff, while the recreation league playoffs will pit the best two record teams against each other, the 3rd and 4th and so on down to 13th vs 14th to complete the season. Team schedules for those games will be out by February 18th so you can plan for those time slots for your games that next few weeks.

Two very high priority items for club service opportunities are being planned for now with Charlene Young recently asking for volunteer instructors for the Sentinel HS February 25-25, and in addition the Big Sky HS March 16-17, PE curling days.

Big Sky HS March 16 and 17

Monday March 16

8:00 – 9:00 am; 9:40 -10:40 am; 12:00 – 1:00 pm; 1:40 – 2:40 pm;

Tuesday March 17:

8:00 – 9:00 am; 9:40 -10:40 am; 12:00 – 1:00 pm; 1:40 – 2:40 pm

Please send in your availability ASAP for these as we need a good turn out as we expect to host approximately 1,000 kids during these four days.

Another very big event is the MCC hosting of the MoPac Open Bonspiel March 27-29 with registration closing on our website February 28th. A number of volunteer committees have been identified that will need many helpers to staff them. We will need up to 8 helpers for each committee with 2-4 hours of work each during the 3 day event. The committees are:

1. Registration, opening ceremony, chaired by Lee Banville

2. Food and snacks, led by Kris Lee

3. Services such as clothing sales, raffles, and auctions (we need a lot of auction items donated if everyone can help with that), led by Duncan Lutes and Bob Keane

4. Ice maintenance crew, led by Peter Hicks and Barry Bollenbacher

Please send in your availability to our club email at

During the month of February, board elections will be held, so you will be seeing more information regarding an outreach for those who would like to participate as a board member this next year, and an election ballot following soon after. A MCC annual meeting will be held in March following the election of board members.

On February 14th a Valentine’s Day social is planned during league play with treats being provided by the board.

Spring league registration on our webpage will be available soon. Spring league will be Monday evenings April 6-May 18. Cost $70/person for 7 games for 40+ players

Friday open curling is still available: For 10 bucks on most Fridays from 10 am to 1pm; times may vary a bit, hosted by the Glacier Ice Rink. Check GIR web page each week for times.

A reminder, for the teams that curl at 9pm during winter league, we need 4-6 folks to show up at 8pm to help prepare the ice etc. The hour from 8 to 9 goes toward your league service, and you can document that in the blue binder hanging in the equipment shed door. Please mark down time served, and have a board member initial it, and when you accumulate 4 hours send a note to Duncan Lutes for your $25.00 rebate. dclutes -at-

We had a great turnout for the instructional curling at the “Winter Break” event at the Ranch Club January 17th. Volunteer instructors, please do not forget to write down your time in the blue binder in our equipment cabinet.

Did you know? MCC Club Rules for the Competitive League for substitutions follow closely with the USA Curing rule for minimum number of rostered players on a team that can play without a forfeit. This minimum is 2 plus an alternate (or substitute) to make a team of 3. Only one substitute per game can participate as part of the team. Three rostered players plus 1 sub, or 4 rostered players can also make up the team. MCC Club Rules are posted under the League heading on the webpage for a complete listing of rules and procedures for play.
